anatomical structures shaped like the fingers of a glove that, under normal conditions, are present in the intestinal mucous membrane and function in the absorption of nutrients.

villous atrophy

pathological changes to the intestinal villi, which flatten out; in the case of total atrophy they disappear entirely, causing malabsorption.
