“Mommy, are we there yet?”

• Traveling by car can be fun! There are so many things to stop and see. Traveling by car also allows for more flexibility. With some planning and some helpful suggestions your journey can be a real vacation success.
Don’t forget the sense of adventure while on your road trip. Often traveling by car can make history come alive with each place you visit. So plan for extra snacks, books, games, and music to keep the little ones occupied while enroute – and enjoy the stops along the way!

When traveling with children make sure to allow enough time for regular sleep habits, a bit of time to romp, and leisurely meals and snacks. Children tend to do better with some stability in their routines. Try to maintain the usual bed and meal times as much as possible.

Protection from the sun is important even though you are in the car. There are sun shades that can be attached to the windows using a suction cup are amusing to look at and keep the worst of the heat at bay.

• A cooler or a picnic basket full of gluten free snacks and lunch is always a good idea. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great snacks. Sandwiches made with Schar classic white rolls or sandwich bread are a healthy alternative to many fast food offerings along the road.

• Make sure to pack some of the kids favorite snacks and treats too. Schar shortbread, wafer or sandwich cookies are always a welcome break. Schar table or snack crackers as well as breadsticks are a nice alternative too.

• Make sure to have plenty of drinks along for the ride. Water is always a good choice, but an occasional sport drink, sweetened tea or fruit juice are always a nice treat.

• Make sure to schedule breaks along the way. Plan ahead and find out which restaurants have a gluten free menu. Plan a stop near a park or attraction so the children can stretch their legs before starting back on your adventure.

• Make sure that the children have plenty to keep them busy while in the car with reading, drawing, writing or listening. Audio books are great for the car ride,or they could bring along their GameBoy or MP3 player. It is always a good idea to get a few surprises for the trip and give them to the children along the way. This will be sure to bring a smile to their faces.

Guessing games and puzzles that the whole family can take part in are also great, for example number plate games, counting cars of specific colors or from certain countries, making words from the letters on number plates etc. Older children often enjoy following the route themselves on their own map.

• Being prepared is always a good motto for a car trip. Often some ginger candy to chew on will settle an upset stomach. There are also numerous antimotion medications available over the counter. Just in case though, make sure to have some clean wipes, bags, and a change of clothes near by.

• Occassionally trading places in the car can keep the sense of adventure alive. Sit with the children in the back seat. It is a great opportunity to read, play games, work on puzzles, or even just snuggle.
